But her parents didn’t seem in love the way she and Flip were; when her father went away for long business trips, Betty didn’t appear to miss him. Maybe, Jamie thought, you could relax into your complete self only when the crazy, buzzing, drunk love had faded. Maybe it was the love itself, its constant presence and intensity, which made things awkward in the first place.

“So, should I, like, pretend that I remember your sister from school?” Flip asked.

“I guess,” Jamie said. At that moment the light in Renee’s room went out.

“Think your parents will want to get high? I haven’t had any doobage in two weeks.”

“I dunno,” Jamie said, and the light in her parents’ room went out.

“So, are we going in?” Flip leaned forward and examined Jamie’s face.

“You know,” Jamie stared at the house, “I think everyone’s asleep. The lights are all out.”

“Let’s have sex in the pool.” Flip slapped his hand against Jamie’s crotch and began rubbing as if to call a genie out of a lantern.

“Let’s just wait until tomorrow.” Jamie couldn’t possibly feel comfortable having sex with her sister brooding upstairs and Dog Feather lurking somewhere.

“You’re torturing me!” Flip opened his door and stepped out.

Jamie hesitated, one foot out of the bus. There was no way she could prevent Flip from coming inside, she decided. She hoped that Renee planned to stay in her room, door shut, for the night.
